WORKING OUT OF AREA

Dear member,

It has been highlighted that UNISON A&E members are being ordered rather than asked to work in different areas at the start of their shift; previously members had been asked not instructed.

UNISON believes this is an unreasonable management instruction and is putting UNISON members at risk both physically and mentally.

To have to go into a different area on the odd occasion due to demand is acceptable but to insist/order you have to work a full shift in an area over 40 miles away is not acceptable.

The trust needs to realise that local knowledge is vital, not just in knowing where the hospitals are but in understanding which areas of an unfamiliar city you will be more at risk of attending potentially hostile incidents and there will a requirement to stand off.

UNISON is instructing all members to refuse to work in different areas (if requested to do so for a full shift) because it is an unreasonable request.

There is a possibility that the trust may still order/insist members travel to different areas, if this happens please don’t put yourself at risk of disciplinary action. Instruct the trust you are complying with the instruction under duress and will be raising a formal grievance. Please also instruct EOC you will need to return for your meal break because you cannot carry food on your vehicle.

Remember the dispatcher in EOC will probably be a UNISON member and is also acting on instructions from the trust, so please do not argue with them.

If you have any problems over the next few days please contact Bryn Webster 07798825574
